Ever get confused about which word to use? We explain when to use advice or advise?
Advice is a piece of beneficial information you give to somebody. For example:
My advice to him was to eat more fruit.
Advise is the action of giving information. As a “doing word” (or verb) you can add “ed” (advised) or “ing” (advising). For example:
• Please advise me of a convenient time for us to talk.
• She advised me to take the train.
If in doubt replace the word “advice” with the word “information”. If it still makes sense you know it’s the correct spelling. For example:
Right: My information to him was to eat more fruit
Wrong: She information me to take the train
